Orienting new Faculty & Staff is important to the completion of the recruitment process. New hires usually begin with enthusiasm and great expectations about engaging in a new career opportunity; orientation helps bolster the positive energy of those expectations and also provides valuable information about working at the University.
Discussing job duties and expectations during the interview process should not replace orienting the new team member once they have arrived at Columbia. Transferred and promoted Faculty & Staff should also receive an orientation that provides a clear understanding of the area’s goals and directives and how their position supports the unit. Job responsibilities should be clearly communicated at the start of the working relationship.
We have deisgned two checklists, one for your use as a manager, and one for the New Hire's use. The Manager's New Hire Checklist (PDF) provides highlights of information to be covered during your department’s or school’s orientation. The page designed for New Hires lists everything a New Hire needs to do in order to be paid, enroll in benefits, obtain computing access, and become oriented.
It is also important to ensure that your new hires attend the Morningside Faculty & Staff Orientation: Welcome Program offered by Human Resources, either at Morningside or at the Medical Center. These sessions are held frequently at both campuses and provide an excellent overview of the University community.
New employees are given valuable information about healthcare coverage and other important benefits. For overviews of benefits for Officers and Support Staff, visit the Benefits page on the HR website.
