Health Services at Columbia assists employees on the Morningside campus by presenting health maintenance and illness prevention programs and consulting with groups of employees regarding work-related health issues.

Note: Health Services does not offer on-going primary medical care for employees.

Health Services provides urgent care assessment for injury or sudden illness occurring at work.  Clinicians will provide immediately necessary treatment and refer the employee to emergency services or to his or her primary care provider for follow-up treatment. (There is no charge for these services.)  Health Services also provides flu shots, Hepatitis B immunization (if required by the individual’s job), and measles immunization (if specified in a pre-employment agreement) are available at cost.

Columbia employees anticipating travel may obtain a Travel Assessment at the Health Services Travel Medicine Program.   An appointment is required and a fee of $35 is charged for the Travel Assessment.  The Travel Medicine Program also provides immunizations commonly prescribed for travelers, for example, yellow fever and typhoid.  These immunizations are provided at cost to employees, making the Travel Medicine Program one of the best alternatives available locally for travel medicine.

The Rape Crisis/Anti-Violence Support Center at Columbia University is also a program of Health Services.  The Center is a confidential resource for questions and concerns about sexual assault, relationship violence, childhood sexual abuse, and other forms of violence. In addition, assistance is available to the friends and loved ones of survivors.  The Center can provide resources and referrals for on- and off-campus support and advocacy.  For assistance, please call (212) 854-4366 or (212) 854-HELP.

Confidential HIV antibody testing, counseling, and referral for treatment is available to all members of the Columbia community. There is no fee for these services, and no appointment is needed. Call (212) 854-7970 for more information and walk-in hours.

Alice! is Columbia’s Health Education Program.  Staffed by a team of health educators.  Alice! offers a number of programs for both students and staff.

  • Go Ask Alice ! is the world’s leading health question and answer Internet service.  On line since 1993, Go Ask Alice! answers anonymously-posed questions on everything from acne and anti-depressants, to meditation and masturbation.  New Q&As are posted each week and you can always search the site’s archives of more than 3,000 past entries.
  • Get Alice ! in Your Box is a free weekly e-mail providing you with links to the new Go Ask Alice! Q&A titles, plus occasional news you can use to meet your personal and work health goals.  Click on a title and you’ll go directly and anonymously to that new Q&A.
  • Stressbusters are teams of students who deliver neck and back rubs for total relaxation.  You can get them for free at select CU public events, and you can bring them to your office or department for meetings and events.  Wind Down Wednesdays are now a weekly fixture at Columbia, students and staff can wind down with free Stressbusters stress breaks at the Alice! office on Wednesdays during the Fall and Spring semesters.  There’s a little bit of heaven on Lerner 7 every Wednesday from 12–1 pm.
  • The 100 M.I.L.E. Club:  The 100 MC offers you an online, interactive opportunity to learn about, design and track your personal fitness activities.  The program, which allows participants to set personal exercise goals and record progress throughout the semester, is open to all Columbia students, faculty, staff and alumni.  M.I.L.E. stands for “minutes I logged exercising.”  The goal is to spend at least 100 minutes per week being physically active.
