The Office of Public Affairs provides news and information about Columbia to the public and media organizations, sponsors press events, and promotes the mission of the University. Public Affairs also oversees the Office of University Publications, Columbia Video and Photographic Services, and the Visitors Center.
Public Affairs assists journalists worldwide who seek faculty experts on current events or information about scientific discoveries and new research at Columbia. The office oversees and provides content for the news sections of the main Columbia website and publishes the Columbia University Record.

The Secretary of the University is the liaison between the senior administration and the Trustees. The Secretary prepares the agenda for Trustees’ meetings and records and maintains the minutes.
The Office of the Secretary maintains the University Charters and Statutes as well as the By-Laws and Rules of Order of the Trustees. The Secretary issues formal letters of appointment to University faculty upon the approval of the Provost. The Office prepares Blue Seal Letters so that University faculty receive appropriate courtesy for observation and study while traveling. The Secretary of the University grants copyright privileges and authorizes the use of several versions of the King’s Crown and the University Shield to Columbia students, divisions, and affiliates.

The University Archives and Columbiana Library collects, preserves, and makes available for research the administrative records of the University, as well as personal papers, publications, and memorabilia related to the University’s history.
Archival holdings date from c. 1890 through the 1990s and document the evolution of University governance and administration; the history and development of individual schools, colleges, and academic departments; the professionalization of higher education and the development of academic disciplines; curriculum development, including the formation of the Core Curriculum; the careers of noteworthy faculty and officers; the design and construction of the Morningside campus; and the University's relationships with city, state, and federal governments. Administrative Records available for research in 2005 are those that were created prior to 1980. In addition, the UACL retains University publications from bulletins to yearbooks; a library of books and pamphlets on Columbia's history; scrapbooks and memorabilia; in excess of 60,000 images, as well as some 50,000 negatives (both glass plate and film); a collection of lantern slides; and biographical information on students, faculty, and alumni.
Included in the University Archives and Columbiana Library is the King’s College Room, which commemorates the founding of Columbia in 1754 by royal charter of King George II. The room, made possible by a gift from Edmund Ashley Prentis, School of Mines Class of 1906, contains portraits of the founders, 18th century documents and artifacts, and a small number of books from the original library of King’s College.

The Office of Communications and External Relations works to increase the visibility and effectiveness of programs, achievements, and notable research endeavors of the Medical Center. This goal is facilitated through publications, public and media relations, and marketing programs. The office's News Bureau works closely with news and science media by keeping news media informed of achievements by faculty and students and coordinating interviews and television film crews.
The publications staff publishes internal and external magazines and newsletters, including P&S Journal, the magazine of the College of Physicians and Surgeons distributed to alumni, faculty, staff, and students, and In Vivo,a periodical for faculty and staff that focuses on news throughout the Medical Center. The staff also publishes the P&S Annual Report.
The office's online communications include an online events calendar, a calendar e-mail open to subscribers, an events e-mail list serve, daily media reports and an e-mail calendar newsletter issued by the Medical Center's leadership.

Founded in 1877 and financially independent from Columbia since 1962, the Columbia Daily Spectator is a daily independent newspaper written and edited by Columbia University undergraduates. For busy students, the Spectator is a consistent source of local news. For the community at large, it is one of the only sources for information about University events and services. Serving a community of more than 60,000 students, faculty, administrators and residents, the Spectator is read widely in Morningside Heights and Harlem.
